The Schlotfeldt brothers (John, Herman, and Hans Detlaf) owned the Roslyn Brewing Company together with Adolf F. Kuhl (sister Annie's husband), and Ernest and Charles Duerrwachter. The Schlotfeldt brothers also owned meat markets in Roslyn, Ellensburg, Cle Elum and North Yakima. When the shop was sold in the early 1900's, Hans received nothing. This was a typical German family where the oldest brother received all and the others were expected to go out and earn their way.
The following is from the Roslyn Sentinel dated March 1, 1895.
The principal manufacturing enterprise in Roslyn is conducted by the Roslyn Brewing company, a corporation composed of A. F. Kuhl, Ernest Duerrwachter, Chas. Duerrwachter and the Schlotfeldt Bros. The brewery was established several years ago, but became the property of the present management in 1893. The brewery has a capacity of 5000 barrels per annum and is one of the best equipped establishments of its size in the Northwest. In Roslyn their product is handled by five places of business and their private sales are quite large. The practical work of the institution is handled by Ernest Duerrwachter, a skilled brewer, and the quality of their product increases in excellency as time progresses. It is strictly a home enterprise and is deserving of liberal support. The members of the firm are all natives of Germany and of thoroughly enterprising character.
There are few markets in the state of Washington that disposes of more meat in the course of twelve months than the firm of Schlotfeldt Bros. & Sides. The former gentlemen are comparatively late arrivals in Roslyn, but the latter has been here a sufficient length of time to be classed among the pioneers... Mr. Sides became a member of the firm with the Messr. Schlotfeldts in January, 1894 and he has exclusive charge of the Roslyn enterprise. The Schlotfeldt Bros. have markets in Ellensburg and North Yakima, and are the heaviest meat dealers in Central Washington. The Roslyn shop alone will consume 2200 head of stock in the course of a year. The firm is progressive and up with the times in every particular.
